The Outdoor Music Trail features works by different Irish composers playing in five outdoor locations; an inner trail with three locations playing music outdoors daily from 1pm to 4pm and an extended trail incorporating the first three locations, plus two additional locations which can be followed and listened to with a smartphone. The extended trail employs the very latest in location-based, augmented reality technology and is available by downloading the free Layar app for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and Android devices.

An extensive event programme follows from 21st August to 1st September involving St Audoen’s Church, The Amphitheatre at Dublin City Council, Christ Church Cathedral, St Patrick’s Cathedral, The Back Loft, City Hall, The Coach House and Smock Alley Theatre.

Industry- A unique vintage furniture shop opens in Temple Bar’s Old City

Industry 1

An eclectic new shop offering a mix of vintage, up-cycled and new furniture combined with unusual household accessories and quirky home furnishings has just opened in the heart of Dublin’s Temple Bar. Located on Smock Alley off Cow’s Lane in the Old City area of Temple Bar, INDUSTRY offers a unique and innovative style choice for Irish homes.

Owned and managed by 26 years old Dubliner, Vanessa Mac Innes, INDUSTRY specialises in industrial furniture from the 1930s and 40s which she sources from antique markets and vintage fairs throughout Europe.

INDUSTRY is the first specialist shop of its kind in Ireland. Vanessa, an interior designer, saw a gap in the market for home owners looking for something a little bit different.  “I love industrial design, these pieces were made at a time when the industrial revolution was at its height, metal became the new wood”.

Vanessa is passionate about industrial design, “the quality and workmanship is outstanding, Industrial furniture is definitely made to last. A lot of hard work has gone into hand selecting each unique piece for the shop,” says Mac Innes. “Everything has been carefully considered and personally chosen, nothing comes into the shop without a story!”

INDUSTRY is open from Tuesday to Saturday, for further details call Vanessa on 01-6139111

Clyne Gallery

We would like to welcome The Clyne Gallery to Temple Bar this month.  This brand new gallery is located in the Old City area of Temple Bar and is run by well known artist and art project consultant Patricia Clyne-Kelly.

Patricia tells us the aim of the Gallery is to “showcase the best, to afford the creative industries in Ireland a deserving exhibition venue and to present something new with each visit” The group shows change regularly so it is always worth a detour!

De Blacam and Meagher Architects, when designing the award-winning Wooden Building in Temple Bar, included a retail unit at its base. Vacant until now, the space has been totally renovated under the  guidance of architect Mark Price. It has been fitted out to create an elegant art gallery, which is accessed at street level and leads down a timber staircase to a space dug into the foundations of Dublin’s Old City, creating amazingly high walls. The Gallery is a welcoming intimate space in which to browse at leisure.

Clyne Gallery 2

Debut: The Opening Exhibition is running until August 15th

This exhibition showcases the work of several contemporary artists, some of whom graduated in recent years, others are mid career and some are well seasoned and established professional artists. Portrait of a jewellery designer – Ann Tyrrell talks about her journey, work and time at Designer Mart at Cow’s Lane

latest jewellery march 071

Ann Tyrrell came to jewellery design by the scenic route, but has always been involved in making/designing, and just generally being creative.  She comes from an artistic background, and many of her extended family are involved in the world of art.

While working with AerLingus she did a lot of travelling to exotic places and was always drawn to beads and precious stones, so a collection was started.  There was no clear plan, just a huge attraction to stones and beads. This collection gathered dust for years while she raised her family and went back to college to study Montessori teaching.  Eventually, many years later, the time was right and Ann enrolled in a silversmithing course… followed by a beading course… followed by yet another beading course,  followed by lots and lots of practice using up all those beads she had gathered.  Then the visits started to the Dublin bead shops… spending small fortunes on tiny bags of beads while her friends were buying shoes… furtively buying online late at night: it was becoming a very expensive hobby!

One day the light went on – if she was to continue with this hobby she was passionate about then she would have to make it pay for itself, at the very least!!  And that’s when she heard about the new Designer Mart which was starting on Cow’s Lane in Temple Bar.

Ann finds the question of what influences her design difficult to answer – basically it’s the shapes/colours of the semi-precious stones and silver, together with her love of the dramatic and a good eye for detail that influence her distinctive look. The look is strong, contemporary and quirky and stands out in a crowd. While others love the paintings of Frida Kahlo, it’s her bright and bold jewellery that attracts Ann and would definitely have been an early influence. Ann spends a lot of time working on designs and then making and remaking on her design board until she’s completely happy with the look.

Alongside Ann’s signature range, she has a beautiful pearl collection – all freshwater pearls, hand-knotted to hang well, with little modern touches like dangles on silver rings, or silver focal beads.  These are classics to last a lifetime.

Ann is committed to high standards of workmanship and good customer relations.

She has a loyal following of regular customers.  She takes commissions and is happy to discuss personal requirements.

Ann and her work can be found at Designer Mart at Cow’s Lane each Saturday from 10am – 5pm and her work is also for sale at the Cow’s Lane Designer Studio on West Essex Street seven days a week.
