Unlocking the potential of cultural and creative industries – EU-wide online consultation

Temple Bar Cultural Trust welcomes the latest initiative from the European Commission encouraging greater feedback and participation from the public into its 2020 strategy for the development of Culture and the Creative Industries. The aim of the new strategy will be to facilitate and help individuals and organisations working in this rapidly expanding sector to achieve their full potential and contribute to the social and economic renewal of EU member states.

An online consultation process was launched on May 3rd by Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and TBCT is planning its submission and welcomes the views of organizations within the arts, cultural and creative community sector, the public and interested parties in the creation of a new vision for the development of this important sector in the Irish context.

The cultural and creative industries – including the performing arts, visual arts, cultural heritage, film, television and radio, music, publishing, video games, new media, architecture, design, fashion design and advertising – have been identified as a key driver of economic recovery across Europe.

This consultation coincides with the publication of the Green Paper Unlocking the potential of cultural and creative industries which raises many important questions that need to be addressed to give more support to this sector, which currently employs more than 5 million people across the EU, and contributes 2.6% to European GDP.

If you are interested in contributing to this submission or wish to express your views on the matter please contact Alastar MacAongusa amacaongusa@templebar.ie. The public consultation period ends on 30 July 2010.

You can visit the European Commission website for further details.

Portrait of a jewellery designer – Ann Tyrrell talks about her journey, work and time at Designer Mart at Cow’s Lane

latest jewellery march 071

Ann Tyrrell came to jewellery design by the scenic route, but has always been involved in making/designing, and just generally being creative.  She comes from an artistic background, and many of her extended family are involved in the world of art.

While working with AerLingus she did a lot of travelling to exotic places and was always drawn to beads and precious stones, so a collection was started.  There was no clear plan, just a huge attraction to stones and beads. This collection gathered dust for years while she raised her family and went back to college to study Montessori teaching.  Eventually, many years later, the time was right and Ann enrolled in a silversmithing course… followed by a beading course… followed by yet another beading course,  followed by lots and lots of practice using up all those beads she had gathered.  Then the visits started to the Dublin bead shops… spending small fortunes on tiny bags of beads while her friends were buying shoes… furtively buying online late at night: it was becoming a very expensive hobby!

One day the light went on – if she was to continue with this hobby she was passionate about then she would have to make it pay for itself, at the very least!!  And that’s when she heard about the new Designer Mart which was starting on Cow’s Lane in Temple Bar.

Ann finds the question of what influences her design difficult to answer – basically it’s the shapes/colours of the semi-precious stones and silver, together with her love of the dramatic and a good eye for detail that influence her distinctive look. The look is strong, contemporary and quirky and stands out in a crowd. While others love the paintings of Frida Kahlo, it’s her bright and bold jewellery that attracts Ann and would definitely have been an early influence. Ann spends a lot of time working on designs and then making and remaking on her design board until she’s completely happy with the look.

Alongside Ann’s signature range, she has a beautiful pearl collection – all freshwater pearls, hand-knotted to hang well, with little modern touches like dangles on silver rings, or silver focal beads.  These are classics to last a lifetime.

Ann is committed to high standards of workmanship and good customer relations.

She has a loyal following of regular customers.  She takes commissions and is happy to discuss personal requirements.

Ann and her work can be found at Designer Mart at Cow’s Lane each Saturday from 10am – 5pm and her work is also for sale at the Cow’s Lane Designer Studio on West Essex Street seven days a week.
