On Saturday 19th June, a top class professional cycling racing is set to celebrate Dublin as European Capital of Sport in 2010. The route will go through the heart of the city, taking in Temple Bar, Christ Church and City Hall.
The event is part of an Irish Tour Series during National Bike Week, with the first event taking place in Belfast on Friday 18th and the final round happening the following night, Sat 19th in June in Dublin.
The return of cycling racing to Dublin City Centre after an absence of almost 20 years is seen as a great opportunity to showcase a sport enjoying a strong revival and also Dublin City as a sports friendly city.
A series of fun and demonstration events for kids, families and local business are planned for the afternoon. The main event will be a 1 hour race with 50 competitors comprising of 5 teams from England, 4 regional provincial teams and the Sean Kelly An Post Team. The event will also be televised by Setanta TV.
Our 3 Temple Bar outdoor markets will remain open later this day so come in to Temple Bar on Saturday 19th June and enjoy the day!

Keith Donald (saxophonist, composer, writer) has put together a terrific line-up for a special concert to celebrate the 65th birthday of incarcerated Burmese activist, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and Freewoman of Dublin, Aung San Suu Kyi.
Keith spent many years working and playing music in Temple Bar and he founded MusicBase which used to operate from the building that now houses the Dublin Theatre Festival. Joining Keith will be a cast of stars including Christy Moore, Niall Toner, Brendan Graham, Noel Eccles and Neil Martin, all of whom have links over many years with Temple Bar.
We think this will be a great night’s music! The concert takes place in the National Concert Hall on Saturday 19th June. Tickets from only €20 at the National Concert Hall.
A limited number of tickets will on sale at TBCT’s offices, 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 from Tuesday 8th June – first come first served, no booking and cash only!

It’s great to see that Culture Night is on the agenda again. This time it’s the Labour Party who have got the Culture Night bug! They’ve just published some ideas on supporting our tourism industry which is worth €5.2 billion to Ireland’s economy. One of their ideas – and we think it’s great – is to extend Culture Night so that it happens twice a year. Just imagine what that would be like!
We’ve done our homework on this and we know that a lack of information and awareness can stop people going to visit cultural attractions and we know that Culture Night helps to fix that. So why not expand the success of Culture Night to a twice yearly event with one day in early April and one in September to allow cultural attractions to substantially increase their profile?

The weather was glorious, the streets and city centre buildings hummed with music, and the crowds came in droves – Temple Bar Cultural Trusts In Handel’s Day celebrations brought 18th Century Dublin back to life for one fabulous day on April 13th.
In Handel’s Day attracted thousands of people of all ages to a day-long programme of free events in venues across Dublin. Performances and events took place in a wide variety of venues, from medieval churches to a sun-baked Meeting House Square. Audiences on the day ranged from as large – an estimated 2,100 people for Messiah on the Street; to the more intimate 50 seater setting for the talk on Handel & Dublin 1742 given by Dr. Barra Boydell.
With an extended programme of workshops for the over 55s and for children, the audience for In Handel’s Day is growing all the time, with this year’s results showing the two largest audience segments to be the over 55s (49%) and the under 35s (23%).
Thank you to everyone who took time on the day to complete our audience survey. We now know that over 90% of audiences said their experience was ‘as good or even better than expected’, with many of you describing your In Handel’s Day experience as ‘great day out, with perfect weather for outdoor performance and walking. A real mini festival, and living memorial to Handel and Messiah. Good for Dublin’s real cultural image! Our most popular events were Messiah on the Street, Ye Lord Mayor’s Delight and A French Dance-off.
