The IFI and Temple Bar Cultural Trust Summer Sensational have teamed up to offer one lucky winner the prize of a family pass (4 tickets, worth €15) to the closing film Carlitos and the Chance of a Lifetime at the IFI Family Festival on Sunday July 11th at 4pm.

Telling the story of Carlitos, a young boy who dreams of playing football for Spain and finding a family, this Spanish film is perfect for film and World Cup fans everywhere. And don’t let subtitles put you off; there’ll be a reader too.

This summer the IFI Family Festival brings films from around the world to young film fans aged 4 to 12. Starting on July 8th with Mia and the Migoo, a beautiful French animation with a sense of adventure, a brave girl and an environmental message, the festival continues with stories of friendship, mystery and fun from Latvia, Germany and other places. There are workshops too where you can learn more about animating and filmmaking.

What’s the buzz? Take part in the Summer Sensational online competition!

Are you an active blogger, an online reviewer, a social networks addict or even a beginner in online technologies?

We are looking for a team of people to create an online buzz during The Summer Sensational and explore the influence of new media on the production and consumption of Culture.

Whether it’s a blog post, a video or series of tweets, your contribution will have to give the audience a sense of what’s happening during The Summer Sensational. We will be awarding the m most creative work an HTC Legend Smartphone, kindly provided by Meteor!

Photos for the competition are being stored on Flickr, a free photo storage and sharing site owned by Yahoo. You can submit your Dublin photos by following these steps:

  1. Visit the TBCT Photo Competition Flickr Group page and sign up for a free Flickr account or login using your existing Yahoo account if you have one.
  2. Once you are signed in, visit the TBCT Photo Competition Flickr page and join the TBCT Photo Competition group.
  3. Upload photos to your account.
  4. Go to the page of the photo(s) you want to submit to the competition.
  5. Click the “Send to Group” button between the photo title and the photo.
  6. Choose the “TBCT Photo Competition” group and you’re done!

Once you’ve opened a Flickr account, you can also add photos via your mobile and share them on your blog.

The Deadline for Submission is Tuesday 20th April and the winner will be notified via their Flickr account.

Win tickets to Spring up! at The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children

The Ark and Temple Bar Cultural Trust have teamed up to offer one lucky winner the prize of two tickets for children aged 3 – 6 to Spring up! The Ark’s pop-up workshop with artist Liz Smith, on Tuesday 30th March at 10.30am. Explore the art of pop-up in The Ark’s visual arts workshops– Spring up!, Pop-up Travels and Animal Magic.

To enter, simply reply to us with a comment telling us what you are most looking forward to this spring.  The competition closes on Thursday 25th March.

You can explore the art of pop-up in three brand new visual arts workshops at The Ark with artist Liz Smith. Construct impressive 3D pop-ups with impact and movement by using papers, cards and creative techniques. Join The Ark during the Easter School Holiday for Spring up! and create lively pop-up illustrations of springing lambs, jumping rabbits, blossoming flowers and anything else that springs up! Watch as your illustrations can hop, jump, swing or spring.

Then, as summer approaches, it is the perfect time to think about travelling, holidays or discovering a new land in Pop-up Travels (April – May). Mountains, boats, trains, planes and surprise characters can all be inspiration for your pop up illustration. You can pop up anywhere in the world, the universe or any place you can possibly imagine.

In Animal Magic (May – June) you can construct a moving pop-up illustration of your favourite wild animal or even create a brand new species of your own. Think about where your animal might live, what it might eat and what it is called – then use your pop-up skills to bring your new animal to life.

Sometimes it takes a girl-sized human, to solve an adult-sized problem.

This is the story of Peggy. And the packing. And the blizzard. And the boat.  

Peggy O’Hegarty and her parents were packers.
Each day someone would call with a job and a time.
‘I want 17 foxes in boxes by breakfast’,
said the caller and all of the packers said: ‘fine’.

But one day the phone it forgot to keep ringing.
And then all the boxes forgot to need stuffing.
And then poor old Peggy, she forgot to keep singing.
And she opened the curtains and found outside … nothing.

Because all of the people in her city were gone.

So Peggy went out to explore…

Following the sell out success of Beware of the Storybook Wolves in 2008, and The Giant Blue Hand in 2009, The Girl who Forgot to Sing Badly is the first exciting initiative running as part of The Ark’s Theatre-Maker in Residence 2010: inspire new theatre for generations.

The Girl who Forgot to Sing Badly is suitable for children ages 7 and upwards, and runs from 26 January – 7 March with public performances on Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm and 4pm (excluding Sunday 31 January) and with extra performances during the mid-term break, Tuesday 16 – Friday 19 February.  School performances for 2nd class and upwards run Tuesday – Friday 10:15am and 12:15pm during term time.

Temple Bar Chocolate Festival Children’s Colouring Competition – winner announced!

The Children’s Colouring Competition, sponsored by Divine Chocolates, as part of the Temple Bar Chocolate Festival is now closed.  367 entries were received from children aged between 2 – 12 yrs old.

We are very pleased to announce the winner of this competition: Julie Malinowska, Age 10, from Sandyford in Dublin.

Win a Willie great chocolate prize to celebrate this year’s Temple Bar Chocolate Festival!

As part of our Temple Bar Chocolate Festival running from October 30th – November 1st Temple Bar Cultural Trust are offering you and a friend a chance to win two tickets to our talk by Willie Harcourt Cooze.  Valued at €15 each this hour long talk will take place at The Button Factory in Temple Bar on Saturday October 31st.

Willie Harcourt-Cooze, the star of the Channel 4 series ‘Willie’s Wonky Chocolate Factory’, grew up on a windswept island off the west coast of Ireland where he spent many childhood days  making cheese, smoking fish and pickling fruit inspired his enduring passion for food and adventure.

He has devoted the last eleven years of his life to producing Venezuelan Black, his 100% cacao bar which is harvested from El Tesoro, his family’s hacienda in the beautiful Venezuelan cloud forest. Willie lives in Devon, where his chocolate factory is based, with his wife Tania and their three children.

All you have to do to be in with a chance to win this prize is tell us about your favourite chocolate experience, it might be a particular bar of chocolate, a cake, a chocolate feast or even a recipe.

You don’t need to find a golden ticket for this one, just simply put pen to paper and enter our Chocolate Festival colouring competition by colouring in the Aztec God of Chocolate.

 

This competition is open to 1 – 12 year old children and entry forms are available now to pick up from the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre, 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 or download online by clicking here.

 

The submission dates for completed entries is Tuesday October 27th and the winning entry will be exhibited along with a selection of others here at our Information Centre from Monday November 2nd.

Christmas Favourites at The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children – Win tickets here!

Celebrate Christmas with some of The Ark’s favourite events!

Join The Ark for Christmas Inklings with visual artist Liz Smith on Saturday 21 – Sunday 22 November. Illustrate, design and construct a pop-up card or picture capturing Christmas tales and winter wonders!

On Saturday 21 November at 11.30am, 3 – 5 year olds will draw animals, trees and winter scenes which will be transformed into pop-ups! At 1.30pm, 6 – 8 year olds will construct 3-D foldable forests, buildings and Christmas characters which will move from side to side with the technique of pull-outs. Then at 3.30pm, 9 – 12 year olds will investigate more advanced methods of paper construction with moving pop-ups and pull-outs. On Sunday 22 November, the whole family can create their own special pop-up card or picture at 12.30pm or 3pm.

Christmas Inklings workshops for schools take place from 24 November – 18 December, see www.ark.ie for more details.

Every weekend from 28 November – 20 December, musicians Nico Brown and Martin Brunsden return to The Ark – their favourite Christmas venue – for a fun and festive hour of musical performance and participation. Traditional and original songs and stories will bring you and your family on a musical experience this Christmas. Hear instruments familiar and exotic including the angklung, a tuned bamboo rattle from Java with a melodious sound. There will also be a special opportunity for everyone to play in the return of The Christmas Angklung Orchestra.

Apples and more this Midsummer in Temple Bar! Win the juiciest of prizes here!

Meeting House Square will be bulging with activity this coming weekend (June 20th and 21st) as Temple Bar Cultural Trust roll out the grass for our Midsummer in Temple Bar celebrations.

To mark the event we have a deliciously juicy mixed case of apple juice, cider, cider vinegar and balsamic vinegar from Llewellyn’s Orchard Produce to give away. David Llewellyn will be just one of the 23 producers and traders on Meeting House Square on Sunday June 21st as part of the Midsummer Fair which will run from 11am-5pm.

Other events happening over the weekend include fire performances, a free outdoor screening of Dead Poets Society and plenty of superb children’s entertainment.
